Sisolak appoints interim state superintendent as Canavero departs

Nevada News

Gov. Steve Sisolak has named Jonathan Moore as interim superintendent of the Nevada Department of Education, filling a critical vacancy as the legislative session gets underway.

Moore has served as deputy superintendent of student achievement within the department since November. He previously worked in the Arizona Department of Education as deputy associate superintendent of K-12 academic standards and, before that, he was a principal in South Phoenix.

The appointment comes on Steve Canavero’s final day as state superintendent. Canavero resigned last month, citing personal reasons.

“I want to sincerely thank Dr. Canavero for his service to our state and Nevada’s students, and I want to thank the employees of the Department of Education who continue to work tirelessly on behalf of Nevada’s students and educators to move Nevada’s education system forward,” Sisolak said in a statement.

The governor also vowed to work with the State Board of Education to determine Canavero’s permanent successor. A timeline for that search process has not been announced.
